Michael Papish
Senior Vice President
Michael has worked at the intersection of the analog physical world and the digital domain since 1999 when he dropped out of Harvard to found MediaUnbound — a pioneer in the field of human+computer AI music recommendation technology. After serving as CEO for ten years, he sold MediaUnbound to Tivo (NASDAQ: TIVO) in 2010, where he then worked as the Director of Strategy, Innovation & Architecture helping to drive the cable TV industry’s transition to IPTV with a focus on personalization and metadata standardization.
After taking time off to bicycle solo across Europe and Russia, he joined Sonos (NASDAQ: SONO) for five years as Global Director of Product Marketing where he led strategy and launched the company’s all-time, best-selling Sonos One speaker. Fascinated by the unique challenges of businesses powered by HW+SW platforms, Michael joined Markforged (NYSE: MKFG) — the world’s largest connected industrial 3D printing platform — as VP of Marketing. During his four years, he was responsible for the company’s marketing and brand-building, including the creation of The Digital Forge brand, launching the flagship FX20 “Beast of the Factory” printer, and running investor marketing during the company’s public listing in July 2021.
Michael left Markforged to join Engine Ventures, an early-stage deep tech venture fund spun out of MIT, as CMO where he oversaw marketing efforts and supported portfolio companies across climate, human health, and advanced infrastructure with marketing and go-to-market strategy. Based on his experiences leveraging HW+SW to impact the real world, Michael joined IfThen as SVP in 2024 to build a practice dedicated to helping the next wave of deep tech and industrial startups tell their stories – giving the world tangible examples how humans are reimagining the built landscape to unlock a better future.
Michael’s mother is proud that he eventually graduated from Harvard with a joint BA in Astrophysics & Philosophy. Since 2011, Michael has served on the board of Harvard’s student-run radio station WHRB 95.3 FM.
